Xiaomi manages to turn heads with its Mi Mix last year. However, it was a very unfinished phone and didn’t ship to any country except China. However, this year, Xiaomi seems to market the Mix lineup as their new flagship lineup with the Mi Mix 2. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 brings the bezel-less design of the Mi Mix in a smaller and more usable form. Here is all that you need to know about the phone.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has a ceramic body just like last year’s Mi Mix. The front is similar to the Mi Mix but has smaller bezels. The phone retains the chin with the front camera on it. The fingerprint sensor is placed at a convenient location at the back. The overall form factor of the phone is now smaller with a 6-inch display at the front. The phone is quite heavy due to the ceramic body and is also very slippery. The phone looks gorgeous but nobody would be willing to risk a drop.
The Mi Mix 2 does not fail to impress in the hardware department with industry leading flagship specifications. The phone runs on the latest Snapdragon 835 SoC and has 6 Gigabytes of RAM. The RAM configuration is consistent across all versions with the storage options ranging from 64 to 256 Gigabytes. Xiaomi claims to have hidden the speaker and proximity sensor with its radio-wave technology. The quality of the calls on the Mi Mix were not very good according to some reviewers. The same has gone for the audio quality from the speakers. The phone comes with global LTE support for 6 modes and 43 bands. In the hardware department, the phone looks quite promising even though Xiaomi’s main focus with the phone was in the design department.
The Mix 2 isn’t big on the camera but it’s good enough for getting good quality photos. The camera element is surrounded by a gold-plated ring which makes it look slick. Coming to the numbers themselves, the phone rocks a single Sony IMX386 sensor. It is a 12-megapixel camera. The front camera is 5 Megapixel. Xiaomi did not talk much about the cameras on the phone during the launch event. This indicates that they haven’t focused on the phone’s camera this year.
The phone will probably come with MiUI 9 out of the box. MiUI is basically Xiaomi’s skin on top of Android. MiUI 9 is based off Android Nougat. This is great considering Xiaomi being infamous for not providing regular and timely updates. MiUI brings many unique features such as support for multiple copies of the same social media apps on the same phone. However, many dislike it because of its cartoonish look. I personally do not like the approach Xiaomi has gone with. In my opinion, they should have partnered with Google to make the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 support Android One as well.
Pricing and Availability
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is expected to go on sale around late this September. Xiaomi has announced that the phone will retail in China at a starting price of RMB 3200 which translates to $500 dollars but there are some variations to be expected from country to country. If the phone manages to be sold under $530 by Xiaomi then it will directly compete with the OnePlus 5. The company says that it will try to launch the phone in as much countries as it can. These include the US, India and other Asian countries.
