MWC15 : Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Overview
While the Galaxy S6 was the main flagship phone from Samsung’s arsenal at MWC15, it wasn’t the only one. Following the (somewhat successful) experiment which Samsung conducted in the form of their Note Edge’s curved display, they’ve now announced the Galaxy S6 Edge.
The specifications are quite similar to the Galaxy S6, so in this article I’ll be focusing mainly on all the factors which set the S6 Edge apart.
BUILD AND DESIGN
Samsung has gone with a standard metal and glass body design for its launched at MWC15, and the Galaxy S6 Edge stands testimony to this new trend. A smooth metallic frame hugs the edges, and lends a premium feel to this device. The back, much akin to the Galaxy S6, is made of Gorilla Glass 4 and is somewhat reminiscent of the back panel of the Nexus 4.
However the edges are what make the device stand out. Samsung has decided to gently curve the edges of the display on both sides of the phone, so what is essentially presented is an experience like none other. In fact, look at the phone from the front, and you’ll almost mistake it for being bezel-less.
This would also contribute a major chunk to the ergonomics, with more efficient gripping and handling the device. Overall, Samsung seems to have raised the bar as far as the design trend for smartphones is concerned!
EDGE DISPLAY – MORE THAN A GIMMICK
With the Note Edge, Samsung had included quite a few features specifically for the edge display, and a similar case has been followed with the S6 Edge. The phone comes with features such as Edge Lighting, People Edge, Information Stream and Night Clock.
While the Information Stream displays news headlines, social media feed and other info on the edge display, the People Edge is a handy access to a few pre-selected contacts. Swipe in from the right side and you’ll get instant access to contacts in order to call or message them.
Moreover, colours are associated with the contacts, so when the phone is face down, the edge will pulse according to the colour, which will let you know who’s calling even without looking at the display.
There’s a fingerprint scanner and an IR Sensor included within the device, which are also present on the Galaxy S6. In essence, the S6 Edge has exactly the same features as the Galaxy S6. The only changes are the revamped design and the functionalities which go with the edge display.
