Jio revealed it’s first phone yesterday at a Reliance’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). While Jio has partnered with other companies such as Lyf Mobiles, the JioPhone is made by the company itself. The company claims that the device is the world’s cheapest 4G smartphone at an “effective price” of free.
The JioPhone is free but the user has to pay an a deposit of Rs 1500 upon buying it. Jio hopes to use this phone as a mean to attract more customers to their network through a phone which provides an affordable 4G phones to the approximated 50 Crore users which can’t afford one.
The phone runs on KAI OS which is basically Firefox OS running on HTML 5. It has 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor with 512 MBs of RAM. It has 4 Gigabytes of internal storage. The phone has a 2 Megapixel and VGA front camera. The rear camera supports video recording too. The phone comes in black.
The phone has the traditional and old styled keypad design with a 2.4 inch screen and 240×320 display. The phone has a 2000 mAh battery. The phone has 4G connectivity, NFC support. It can support external SD Cards and Dual SIM with GSM. The JioPhone also retains the headphone jack. It has basic phone features such as a torchlight, FM radio, call history, microphone and a speaker.
Release Date, Price and Availability
The phone’s trial will launch on 15th of August this year which will be limited to only a few Jio users but the pre-bookings of the phone will start from the 24th of August via the MyJio app. One will have to pay Rs 1500 as a deposit to prevent misuse, which will be refunded after 3 years on returning the device.
