You Can Now Set Amazon Alexa as your Default Voice Assistant on Android

In the battle of Assistants, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are the top contenders in the market. By default, most of the Android smartphones come with pre-installed Google Assistant, whereas Alexa needs to install separately. Now you can set Amazon Alexa as a default voice assistant on your Android smartphones.


As per Reddit user report, you can now access Alexa assistant on your Android device by holding the home button. Earlier you can set Microsoft’s Cortana as the default voice assistant on Android smartphone. However compared to Apple iPhone, Android smartphones allow more flexibility with their voice assistants.

The functionality of Amazon Alexa is still limited as compared to Google Assistant. Also, with Alexa assistant, you can’t make native calls or pull up maps but you can do a quick Google search. In addition, you can’t activate Amazon Alexa assistant by saying its name on your Android smartphone.

How to Set Amazon Alexa as your default Voice Assistant:

  • First, download and install the Amazon Alexa app from Google Play Store.
  • Open the app and sign in with your Amazon account.
  • Then open setting section on your Android device.
  • Select Apps and Notification from setting menu.
  • In that tap on the “Default Apps” and move towards the Assist & Voice input.
  • Now choose Amazon Alexa instead of Google Assistant.

After following the above steps, it will ask for permission, so tap on the “Allow” which will let Alexa to hear your request for calls, messages and to do quick Google search. Also from now, you will see Alexa prompt instead of Google Assistant. In addition, the halo grey variant of an Essential phone launched with built-in Amazon Alexa Assistant.

Users on Reddit confirm that new option for setting an Alexa will be available for some selected phones. The list of various smartphone which supports for default Alexa Assistant includes One Plus One, Xperia, Moto G5 Plus, Essential Phone 1, Google Pixel 2, One Plus 5, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, and Samsung Galaxy S9 devices.
