Twitter Gets Live Stream Feature For Breaking News

As Live Streaming feature was introduced earlier on Facebook. Now Twitter is taking an initiative to get the same Live Stream feature. Twitter will show local news in a Live Streaming window which is present next to its timeline. Twitter will set a partnership with local news stations to select the footage during a major breaking news event.


As a part of this new feature, Twitter started to show live video from local news channel during major breaking news event occurs in the United States. It streams the hours of footage from Miami of Shooting at Broward County’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

Kayvon Beykpour, GM for Video department at Twitter, told BuzzFeed in a statement, “We’re continuing to work on new ways we can surface credible and relevant information to help people stay informed. By pairing live video with the conversation on Twitter, there is no faster way to see what’s happening in the world.”

The live video of Shooting at Florida school runs on mute by default and also seen a Watch button link. By clicking on a video or Watch button link, it takes users to a custom timeline. Similar to hashtag page it will show a larger preview of the video as well tweet about the news event.

As mention above, Twitter has partnered with several local news stations for this new feature. The live stream of breaking news video is currently available to all the users in the United States. You can access Twitter’s Live Stream feature on It doesn’t seem to have rolled out of this feature for mobile app and also there is no official words on global implementation of this feature.

Apart from this, the video play while testing this feature about the Florida school shooting as clearly register more than 50,000  Twitter viewers at one point.


During breaking news, social media platform like Facebook and Youtube quickly play their Live Stream. Now its time for Twitter to compete with all of them.
