Google has announced Duplex technology at Google I/O 2018 conference. Google Duplex is based on Artificial Intelligence which can make a call on your behalf and do conversation just like a human. However, Duplex will use the six new voices which are built for Google Assistant. It also makes some pauses and stretches of words which seems like it is a natural call.
For sounding like humans, Google has added some words like umms and uhhs to the duplex. Right now Google only focuses on three task which includes a restaurant reservation, scheduling for hair appointments and finding out business holiday.
The new Duplex technology will be soon rolling for some Google Assistant users. As Duplex is still in an experimental stage so it will not available for everyone to make secret calls using Google Assistant. Thanks to WaveNet and Duplex technology, now Google Assistant sounds like a human and very natural too. Google also announced Gmail’s Smart Compose feature at an I/O 2018 event.
Google said in a statement to CNET, “We understand and value the discussion around Google Duplex – as we’ve said from the beginning, transparency in the technology is important. We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we’ll make sure the system is appropriately identifies. What we showed at I/O was an early technology demo, and we look forward to incorporating feedback as we develop this into a product.”
Google Duplex Demo:
Once you say, “Ok Google, find me a table for Friday night” to your Google Assistant. Then Duplex within Google app would call restaurants on your behalf and also it would do conversation. For example, if you want to book a table around 7.30 but there wasn’t one. Duplex will ask for other time if it not fit in your criteria. Then the Google app will call another restaurant for booking a table.
At IO 2018 event, Sundar Pichai plays a recording of the Google Assistant which uses new Duplex technology. In a recording, you will notice that Google Assistant is calling a hair salon and restaurant to make a booking. While interacting w ith staff, they didn’t realize that they were dealing with new duplex artificial intelligence or rather dealing with real users.
However, Google Duplex is designed for highly specialized tasks. Also, it uses Google’s speech recognition technology which helps them to interact like a human. The new Duplex feature is rolling out in next couple of weeks as an experiment. Also, Google will focus on few scenarios before expanding it further. So do try the new Duplex and let us know your feedback in our comment section below.
