Checking on your apps’ notifications every few seconds can become quite the addiction. Or having to watch just one more short video, check which are the best poker sites, twit that one juicy bit of news that your followers just have to see… Irresistible temptations. At the end of the day, though, you might wonder why you have achieved so little.
Here comes Google for your help. The anti-distraction, Digital Wellbeing new tool that had been announced in the summer of 2019, at Google’s developer conference, is out of beta. Focus Mode is now available in Android 10 as an integral part of the new setup.
The purpose of the tool is to help you avoid being constantly distracted by your favorite social media, games, and even collaborative work applications. Send them to sleep for as long as you need it!
Focus Mode can be accessed on all devices that have Digital Wellbeing and parental control settings. Among them are all new phones launching with Android 9 and Android 10. The tool first came out as a beta version part of the Digital Wellbeing launched with Android 10.
Those who have been using it as beta do not need to download the tools again because the update is automatic. Phones running Android 9 Pie now are getting it too.
The final release is not conspicuously different from the beta. But there are some useful additions. For example, Focus Mode can now be set to turn on and off at given times, to adapt to your daily schedule automatically.
And it has been given the ability to cheat a little, that is to let you bypass it for 5, 15 or 30 minutes, in case you fall into some deep abstinence crisis… You will be able to snatch those short breaks and use your favorite apps for a little pause from the austere no-distraction mode.
The functioning of the tool is straightforward. Once you have selected the apps that are distracting you, Focus Mode allows you to pause them. If you try to open them, you will get a reminder that the apps are paused. Their notifications will be silenced too, as long as Focus Mode is on and the selected apps will be grayed out.
Here is the simple procedure to activate Focus Mode:
- Open Settings from the app drawer or home screen.
- Scroll down to the Digital Wellbeing section.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Select Focus mode.
- Choose the apps that you want to pause.
- Hit Turn on now to enable Focus mode.
