Airtel Partners with Hotstar to Widen its TV Catalogue
Telecom operator Airtel is partnering with Hotstar, in order to stay on top. It will include entire content of Hotstar on its Airtel TV mobile app. As per the report, some Airtel users will get a free subscription of Hotstar. However, the subscription is limited for selected Airtel users like the Amazon Prime subscription.
The deal on Airtel TV app includes TV shows, movies, and live sports from 22 channels across Star India’s network, in nine different languages. All this content will be available to Airtel subscribers for free of cost. Also, it runs a promotional scheme for Airtel TV until June 2018. Sadly, the app doesn’t include most of Hotstar English language content like HBO, Disney India.
Sameer Batra, CEO Wynk, Airtel’s entertainment subsidiary, said in a statement, “We are delighted to have Hotstar onboard as a long-term partner in our endeavor to build a world-class digital content ecosystem. Their rich content library will add immense value to our content play and add to the user experience.”
The Airtel TV app focuses to be more on local content which includes movies and TV shows in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu among others. By partnering with Star India, Airtel TV now offers access to over 350 live channels (35 in HD), and 10,000 movies and TV shows.
The main aim of Airtel is to boost the revenue from data services. Also to retain the subscribers who pay for their tariff plans with better data benefit. This move will help Airtel to directly compete with Reliance Jio.
Ajit Mohan, CEO Hotstar, said in the statement, “Airtel has among the widest consumer footprints in India and with our expansive content library, comprising rich program. It can filter across age groups, geographies, and interests, there are natural synergies and we are very excited about this partnership.”
As we know Airtel is developing its content portfolio from last few months. Recently, Airtel has announced its partnership with Amazon to offer free Amazon Prime subscription. The subscription is only available for its Airtel postpaid customers on the postpaid plan above Rs 499.
It might offer Hotstar subscription only for postpaid users but might only open Star TV content. The Airtel also claims that its Airtel TV service would be open for all users until June 2018.
